Theme 1b is one of the themes in Movement I that are transitional in nature. This theme could be thought of as two similar ideas or transitions that are combined to form one larger, more comprehensive musical statement. Measures four and five are the boundaries of these two ideas. However, these two parts are not exactly the same; the melodic discrepancies between them provide the needed vehicle for harmonic movement. Lastly, this theme exemplifies Brahms' [unorthodox-for-the-time] rhythmic style. Theme 1b starts on beat two, yet resolves [harmonically and rhythmically] to beat one without the user feeling like he/she has experienced an odd-bar phrase. The starting of musical ideas on offbeats is very common in movement one, most notably in the development.
