![]() B - major (modulatory) ![]() Theme 2b contains a similar consequent phrase to theme 2a. However, the accompaniment part, and the antecedent phrases are different enough to call theme 2b a theme of its own. Furthermore, due to some Brahmsian tonal ambiguity in the melody, the key signature is once again not outlined 100% clearly. Without question, the theme begins in B major. However, by the seventh bar, the theme begins to lead to an unknown destination via a four note motive (m. 9) which is repeated until Transition Y halts the progression. The sequencing four note motive could be repeated endlessly, taking the music to a relative key with Brahms being the deciding factor in the tonal "grave" [read: ending point] of the passage. Interestingly, the composer creatively uses the background instruments' parts to keep the key of B major present. However unusual, the tonal center is not provided by the melody in this theme. | |
